UAE Tourism Sector to Contribute AED 251 Billion by 2025; Focus on Ecotourism and Rural Development

The UAE Tourism Council announced that the nation's travel and tourism sector is expected to contribute approximately AED 251.3 billion to the national economy by 2025. This figure represents a 3% increase over 2024 and is more than 22.2% higher than the pre-pandemic levels of 2019. International tourist spending is anticipated to reach around AED 209 billion.

Driving Economic Growth and Diversification

Chaired by Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism, the Council meeting highlighted the UAE's commitment to enhancing the competitiveness of its tourism sector and solidifying its position as a sustainable global destination. These efforts align with the broader goals of the National Tourism Strategy 2031, which aims to diversify tourism products and develop innovative solutions to attract more visitors.

Advancing Ecotourism and Sustainability

A key focus of the Council's discussions was supporting the recently launched National Ecotourism Policy. This policy seeks to integrate sustainable practices within the tourism sector, balancing economic benefits with the protection of natural ecosystems and resources. The UAE offers 55 nature reserves and has rehabilitated 4,900 hectares of diverse landscapes, providing a strong foundation for ecotourism initiatives.

Within 30 days, the Council plans to finalise a review of the ecotourism policy, selecting a flagship experience from each emirate to enhance the country's nature- and coast-based tourism offerings.

Enhancing Safety and Expanding Rural Tourism

Other discussions included the creation of a unified national safety standard for coastal areas, encompassing beaches, waterfronts, and marine activities. This initiative aims to protect visitors and the nation's reputation while expanding coastal and nature-based tourism options.

Beyond that, the Council explored strategies for developing tourism in areas outside major cities. Plans involve collaborating with the UAE Villages project, in coordination with the UAE Council for Balanced Development, and drawing inspiration from the UN Tourism Best Tourism Villages programme. This collaboration will identify emerging tourism villages, highlight their unique features, develop specific tourism content, and integrate more destinations into the national tourism ecosystem. Cooperation among public and private sectors and local communities is crucial to foster community participation and promote responsible tourism across these initiatives.
