Etihad Airways and Etihad Rail to Explore Integrated Air-Rail Travel Across UAE

Etihad Airways, the UAE's national carrier, and Etihad Rail, the operator of the national railway network, have entered into an agreement to explore integrated travel solutions across the United Arab Emirates. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed at the Arabian Travel Market, outlines plans to connect air and rail journeys, enhance tourism initiatives, and improve overall connectivity within the nation.

Key Initiatives Under Exploration

The collaboration will focus on several strategic areas designed to streamline travel for both residents and international visitors:

• Dedicated Shuttle Services: A primary initiative involves examining shuttle services to connect Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport with the Mohammed Bin [Zayed City](/areas/discover-zayed-city) Passenger Station. This direct link aims to integrate the airport with the broader national railway network.
• Integrated Booking Options: The companies will also investigate offering combined air and rail booking services, allowing passengers to plan their entire journey, from international flight to inter-city rail travel, through a single platform.
• Enhanced Passenger Services: The MoU also covers exploring improved passenger services at railway stations, which could include facilities and support tailored for air travellers.

Impact on Tourism and Economic Diversification

This partnership is designed to facilitate easier onward travel for international tourists arriving in Abu Dhabi, enabling them to reach other destinations across the UAE more conveniently. This strategic integration is expected to support the growth of the tourism sector and contribute to Abu Dhabi's long-term economic development and diversification goals.

Arik De, Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer at Etihad Airways, highlighted that the collaboration would "explore new opportunities to link air travel with destinations across the UAE, supporting tourism growth, creating greater convenience for travellers and contributing to Abu Dhabi's long-term economic development." Similarly, Azza Al Suwaidi, Chief Operating Officer at Etihad Rail, emphasised the continued strengthening of the national railway network's role in connecting UAE cities and regions since passenger services launched earlier this year.

While the MoU sets the framework for these explorations, a launch date for the proposed shuttle or integrated booking services has not yet been announced, as these initiatives remain under assessment.
