RTA Awards AED 1.16 Billion Contracts for Al Meydan Street Development Project

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has initiated a significant infrastructure upgrade with the award of two contracts for the Al Meydan Street Development Project, valued at AED 1.161 billion. This strategic initiative aims to improve traffic flow, increase network capacity, and connect key residential and development areas across Dubai.

The project is designed to enhance connectivity along Al Meydan Street, which serves as a crucial parallel corridor to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. It will feature the construction of 3,700 metres of bridges and 17 kilometres of roads, along with new cycling tracks to integrate with the existing network. The expected completion is by the end of 2028, and it is set to benefit over 500,000 residents in various communities.

Project Scope and Impact

The development will significantly boost the capacity of north-south traffic corridors by 18% and reduce travel time from Al Manama Street and Dubai — Al Ain Road to Umm Suqeim Street from 30 minutes to just 10 minutes, representing a 66% improvement. The project has been divided into two contracts to expedite delivery and maximise its developmental and traffic benefits.

Contract One Details

The first contract focuses on developing Al Meydan Street from its intersection with Latifa bint Hamdan Street to Umm Suqeim Street, and Al Marabea’ Street from Dubai Hills to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, spanning approximately 14 kilometres. Key elements include:

• Upgrading the intersection of Al Marabea’ Street and Al Meydan Street into a grade-separated interchange with four lanes in each direction.
• Construction of 1,600 metres of bridges for the interchange, capable of handling 14,400 vehicles per hour in both directions.
• Providing free-flow movement and a direct link between Umm Suqeim Street and Latifa bint Hamdan Street.
• Establishing a direct connection between Al Marabea’ Street and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, with three lanes in each direction and a capacity of 7,800 vehicles per hour.
• Adding a 700-metre elevated link from Dubai — Al Ain Road towards Nad Al Hamar Street to serve residential areas.

Contract Two Details

The second contract will cover the development of Al Meydan Street from its intersection with First Al Khail Street up to Umm Suqeim Street, extending through Al Khail Road, Latifa bint Hamdan Street, and Al Marabea’ Street. It also encompasses the development of Al Marabea’ Street up to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. This phase will further integrate the road network, ensuring smoother connectivity and supporting urban expansion in line with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and Dubai Economic Agenda D33.
